2009 was overall pretty good year in music, there was couple major releases that I was really looking forward to.
Muse - The Resistance
When I heard about Muse coming out with a new album in 2009 I was psyched, as I had not been quite so much into Muse in the past, this would be my first album to buy and really listen to with thought.
Did I like it?
Without a doubt this album is one of the best rock records ever made, no it's more than that, it's an experience.
The first track being the single track which I had prior to purchasing the album heard in the radio couple of times.
After that, the song Resistance kicks in, and it just blew my mind, just amazing.
Second is the song Undisclosed Desires, it's okay, but by Muse standards, quite average for me.
The song United States of Eurasia is a funny case. It has excerpts from Indiana Jones' Temple of Doom and Queen, not direct clips of course, just very similiar sounding.
The next four tracks are pretty basic Muse quality, very different sounds, familiar but fresh.
However the highpoint of this album is by far the last 3 track Symphony called Exogenesis, like I said it's divided into three tracks; Overture, Cross-Pollination and Redemption. This is the first thing I should have commented on, this Symphony is just mindblowing, fucking masterpiece, it opened a whole new side of Muse to me that I never knew existed, at this point I realized what master musicians these people are, and why their fame and fortune is well deserved.
Exogenesis is the very definition of music and whether you're into rock of not, in any case, you should definitely listen to it.
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Being a fan of PT for many years now, as soon as I heard there was gonna be an album in 2009 I went and ordered the 60£ Special Deluxe Edition from the internet.
I was sure the new album was gonna blow me away as the previous works did, most notably In Absentia and Deadwing.
Verdict?
Well, to my surprise, the music had once again changed from what it previously was, and I can completely understand this, knowing Steven Wilson who said:
"I want Porcupine Tree to be remembered for making it's own sound, and not sounding like any other band out there."
Or something like that. Well, Steven you have accomplished that, and I completely respect you and your music.
However, for me the highpoint of Porcupine Tree was by far on In Absentia, when Steven was exploring the metal music and it's subculture. The way of blending Steven's Progressive rock into Metal was a perfect combination and it worked really well.
So, it's sad for me to see Porcupine Tree again taking a turn for something else, not saying that it still doesn't sound good, it is good, just not AS GOOD.
When I first listened to The Incident, it was really hard for me to isolate the songs from eachother, they didn't sound that much apart, some actually use the same intro etc.
I understand concept albums, but this just didn't quite do it for me, I was so psyched when I listened the album audio sampler from PT's MySpace, too bad it showcased quite literally all of the good bits of the album.
So when I heard the album there was actually no surprises there, everytime I heard something good it was like "Oh it's this, but I've heard this before already."
Well, to be fair, the album is still good, even if Porcupine Tree doesn't manage to make something mindblowing, it's still awesome music and one of last of it's kind on this shitty MTV music generation.
I will always love PT and what they've done to music and I can't wait to see what they come up next.
In short, great album, but not as good as it's predecessors.
By the way I'm not giving numerical ratings because I don't believe that music can be defined with a mere number.
